Big Idea: If…Our lives move in the direction of our strongest thoughts.
Then…The life we have is a reflection of the thoughts we’ve been thinking.
Right thinking leads to right doing which leads to God’s powerful, peaceful presence in your life.
What is Contentment?
Philippians 4:10-13
I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Because he knew that contentment does not lie in what he has, but in Whose he is.
When I come into a relationship with God through his Son, Jesus Christ, I understand whose I am and what I have.
BIG IDEA
Contentment knows that if we have Jesus we have enough.
Contentment is…
1. Contentment is a learned behavior.
Contentment is that inner sense of rest or peace that comes from being right with God and knowing that He is in control of all that happens to us.
2. Contentment is not dependent on circumstances.
Discontent desires more — bigger, better, faster, newer, more comfortable. The contentment you think you feel in certain circumstances is not contentment but simply your satisfaction that things are momentarily the way you think they should be.
3. Contentment is a state of being, not a state of doing.
Our flesh only feels content when we are doing. Being, however, does not end — it is not tied to activity. Paul said he had learned to “be content,” not “do contentment.”
4. Contentment is based on the riches of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
What’s the Secret to Contentment?
1. Remember the cross—the cornerstone of contentment is the cross.
2. Let go of your past
3. Live for today
4. Find sufficiency in Christ Jesus
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
