Parenting Resourcefulness

re|source|ful - Having the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.

The Big Idea: When life gets tough, we can pray for God to make the problem go away, or we can choose to run towards it with God at our side.

1 Samuel 17:10 – The Problem

Then the Philistine (Goliath) said, “This day I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.” On hearing the Philistines words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.

1 Samuel 17:16 – The Trial

For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.

1 Samuel 17:45,48 – The Response

David said to the Philistine, “You come at me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.

Three Principles

  • You are deceived when you think it is preferable to ask God to remove the problem rather than overcome it with God’s help.

  • You are deceived when you value the world’s resources over God’s resources.

  • You are never more “godly powerful” than when you think you are “worldly weak.”

The Takeaway…

  1. Don’t run away, ignore, or detour

  2. God is at your side, what’s in your hand?

  3. Run straight at your problem
